Two years ago The Collection initiated the construction and development of a Community Food Garden in the village of Dixie, close to the Sabi Sands Gowrie Gate and our Lodge, Simbambili.
This Food Garden, located in the grounds of the local school, helps to support six families and supplies a variety of fresh vegetables on sale to a number of Game Lodges, the families of the working staff members and contributes fresh vegetables in the school children’s diets. Supported entirely on donated funds and vegetable sales, the garden has grown through the donations received from regular donors, institutions and guests of The Thornybush Collection.
Royal Malewane, a prestige game lodge within Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, is passionate about creating an environment with growth and upliftment, not only for our Employees but for our local Community too. Our Community Development project is focused on Children and Education.
Since 2009 it has been our mission to create a meaningful change and upliftment in the lives of the children of the Sigagule Crèche (pre-school), which is situated in the nearby village of Sigagule about 10kms from Royal Malewane. We felt it was important to help this Crèche develop the space so that children can learn and have fun in a safe and healthy environment.
The Sigagule Crèche originally had 90 children who were crowded into in one class room that was only big enough for 30 children and they received a grant from the Government sufficient to feed only about 38 children. They also had no running water on the property and two very primitive toilet facilities.
