The Rhino Rewild project was implemented by GKEPF in partnership with African Parks (AP) and supported by the Rhino Recovery Fund (RRF). 300 white rhino were successfully translocated from the African Parks Rhino Rewild farm outside of Klerksdorp into selected GKEPF locations on private reserves in the Greater Kruger open system. The translocations were conducted in two phases over two years in 2024 and 2025. Conservation Solutions provided the transport. The project supports rhino monitoring, the animals have to date integrated well into their natural environment, living like wild rhino. These previously compromised farmed rhinos have begun to fulfil their ecological role and to multiply accelerating the recovery of the rhino population in system. While the risk factors are fully acknowledged and remain, the benefits to rhino as a species and restoration in the landscape far outweighed the risks at this stage.
