Members of the GKEPF team recently took part in the Kruger2Canyon Challenge, joining runners from across Southern Africa for one of the region’s flagship trail running events.
Hosted by KZN Trail Running in partnership with the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region, the event showcases the spectacular landscapes surrounding Mariepskop, Moholoholo, and the Blyde Canyon while promoting healthy lifestyles, environmental appreciation, and outdoor recreation.
Representing GKEPF, Angie Michau completed the 20 km trail run while Lazaro Sibiya took on the challenging 44 km route. For GKEPF, participating in the event was an opportunity to support a valued strategic partner while recognising the importance of investing in the wellbeing of the people working to protect the Greater Kruger landscape.
Alongside the main event, the organisers hosted the Ranger Challenge, inviting field rangers and staff from conservation organisations across the region to participate in the race. The initiative recognises the people working on the frontline of conservation while creating an opportunity for them to experience the event alongside the wider trail running community. GKEPF was pleased to support this initiative by encouraging participation from conservation partners and taking part in the Ranger Challenge alongside fellow conservation practitioners.
While there may be a little friendly competition and a few bragging rights at stake, the Ranger Challenge is about much more than race results. It creates a rare opportunity for field rangers and conservation staff from different organisations to connect outside of operational environments, share experiences, build camaraderie, and strengthen the relationships that support collaborative conservation throughout the Greater Kruger. Participation also promotes physical and mental wellbeing, particularly among field staff and rangers whose work can be both physically and emotionally demanding. Healthy, connected conservation teams are ultimately more resilient and better equipped to protect this shared landscape.
GKEPF congratulates everyone who completed this year’s Kruger2Canyon Challenge and extends its sincere thanks to KZN Trail Running and the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region for organising another successful event and for inviting GKEPF and other participating conservation practitioners to take part in the event’s Ranger Challenge.
