On 6 June 2026, youth football teams, reserve staff, and rangers came together at Timbavati Headquarters for Matches aimed at strengthening relationships between neighbouring communities and protected areas through sport.
Organised through GKEPF’s Prosper programme in partnership with Timbavati Nature Reserve, Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, Thornybush Nature Reserve, the Timbavati Foundation, Thornybush Community, and Eco Children, the event brought together approximately 70 participants for a day of friendly competition, engagement, and environmental awareness.
Participating teams included Rolle Cosmos Football Club, the Timbavati Nature Reserve Rangers football team, the Thornybush Community and Collection football team, and a ranger team from Klaserie Private Nature Reserve.
While football provided the focal point for the day, the broader purpose was to create opportunities for meaningful interaction between young people from neighbouring communities and those working within protected areas, and to speak about the value in conserving these natural spaces.
Sport has a unique ability to bring people together across different backgrounds and experiences. By creating a shared space where community members, reserve staff, and rangers can interact on equal footing, the event helped foster understanding, inclusion, and positive relationships.
For many community members, protected areas can feel distant or inaccessible despite being an important part of the landscape in which they live. Events such as these help create opportunities for communities to engage directly with conservation areas and the people working within them.
At the same time, many rangers and reserve staff come from the very communities neighbouring these protected areas. The event provided an opportunity for them to reconnect with community members while reinforcing the important role they play in conservation.
Beyond the matches themselves, the day also created space for informal discussions around environmental issues, conservation challenges, and the importance of protecting natural resources. Through these conversations, participants were able to engage with conservation in a positive and accessible setting.
One participant, Mr Gazide from Rolle Cosmos Football Club, reflected on the value of the experience:
“This was educational and inspirational. Today we learned a lot within this beautiful reserve. We appreciate the opportunity that GKEPF has created for us to be here. This is the first time we have visited Timbavati.”
The event formed part of GKEPF’s Sports for Conservation initiative, which uses sport as a platform to promote environmental awareness, strengthen social cohesion, and support people-centred conservation.
Long-term conservation success depends not only on protecting wildlife and ecosystems, but also on building relationships, creating opportunities, and ensuring that communities feel included in the future of the landscapes around them.
By bringing people together through sport, the Protected Area Matches help strengthen those connections while creating a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved.
